The Cattle:
The NeighborHerd pasture raises two breeds of cattle at a farm in Kinderhook, NY:
Black Angus, which originated in Scotland in the 1800’s, and Red Devon, native to southwest England, also known as the Devon Ruby for their rich red coats. These cattle are fed an exclusive diet of forages – grasses and legumes – which is what their digestive system was designed to thrive on. A forage based diet results in a healthier animal, and a much more complex, better tasting and healthier meat.
The Herd:
The NeighborHerd is a not-for-profit initiative established by Christopher Hayden to manage the production and delivery of healthy, responsibly produced beef to schools, including Yorktown's, and to provide educational programs related to sustainable food production.
